We came into our 5th game feeling confident, each week we had played and seemed to get stronger. We were playing against Rascals who at this point were on the ladder below us. It was our toughest game yet and we had to bring in 2 other players, Lizzie Ross and Lisa Thomas. Rascals started off really strong, credit to their WD and they were ahead by 7 goals in the first quarter. We seemed flat on our feet and were struggling to get in front. Going on to the second half our spirits were higher and we seemed to work together more, gaining some goals back with some great shooting by Lynn and Emma McAra, some much needed goals! Rascals just had the edge and went on to win the game, it was our first game that we had been really challenged and we found we were possibly out of position but gave it our all and were still in with a shot of winning the competition.
The final game was against Elvington, we had to win this game to win the competition. It was a fast start by Elvington and they were ahead within minutes of the first quarter. We had great support from Sarah Quick and Emma Hayter in the centre third, but we were not converting the goals, Lynn and Emma McAra found it hard in attack and struggled to even see! So we made changes and brought Lizzie Hughes into GS opening up the circle really well, this gaining a few goals back. Rachel Thomas offered great support in each third and made their centre court work hard for it. Alex Thornton, Lynn McAra and Caroline Artindale did some great rotation in the defensive circle. Elvington went on to win the game 15-24.
As Rascals won their last game, this left us third place on the ladder, however we still got a new match ball for entering!!
We also wanted to thank Patsy for umpiring our games always appreciated. To Carol Fozzard and Hayley (Emma's sister) for coming that distance to watch.

Another great year for the York Ladder which has just finished, with Phoenix leaving their mark and finishing in 3rd place.
It was a great start with us playing against Lady Birds A, we came home with a win of 26-16. It was a crazy start to the competition, as we were arriving a player down! Lizzie Hughes (team captain) managed to arrive early and found us an umpire to relieve me to play. It was a good game and we were made to work hard for it, we had great flexibility in the squad and had Caroline Artindale go to WA, turning over 4 back line passes!
We went on to win our next 3 games playing: Rufforth 24-16, Rebels 15-13 and RIoters 38-9. We had great movement within our squad in the centre court, Rachael Thomas played an outstanding centre, in every game she played. Lisa Ingleton who is master of interceptions converted many for us at vital times. We had good support from Sam Mason at WD, bringing the ball up to attack and some great feeds in by Sarah Quick. Alex Thornton played a fantastic GK throughout the competition, considering she had a bad back - this seemed to be the theme for Phoenix as Lynn McAra also braved the pain each week to play in the competition. The Rebels game was cut short due to the torrential rain! Us indoor players weren't sure it would even be on - according to York it has to be storm not play!!!
