Summer League Review 2009

The Harrogate and District Summer League was played at Ashville this year, with 21 teams competing in three divisions. The match format was slightly different to previous years, with the introduction of 20 minutes each-way matches. Good for the fitness when you have two games back to back!

Phoenix was well represented across the divisions with two teams competing in division one; Fire and Storms, one in division two; Phantoms, and an under 16’s side in division three; Flares.

Fire Report by Lynn McAra

Phoenix Fire had a tremendous start to the summer league winning the first two games convincingly and beating Rebels Vixens 18-13 in the third. Game four was set to be a test for Fire against Hi-Lights, who won the HDNL winter league and had remained unbeaten all year! Lizzie Hughes and Vicky Heap were awesome in defence, along with some fantastic support in the centre from Sam Jefferson and Ali Ross! At half time we were 2 goals in front but I (Lynn McAra) felt I needed to bring myself off, introducing Steph Davies who stepped up to the challenge un-phased . Fire finally emerging the victors 21-17, a fantastic result.

Games five, six and seven were all won pretty convincingly by Fire, who along with the introduction of Steph Davies, Lisa Thomas, Alice Hardy and Lizzie Ross from the U19’s squad, gelled really well as a team. Game eight was the second game against Rebels Vixens who had made some tactical changes in a bid to try and beat us, unfortunately for Rebels this was in vain, Fire winning again 22-18.

Game nine unfortunately put a halt to our string of victories. Hi-Lights returned and gave us a fantastic game emerging the winners by 5 goals 22-17. Fire were very disappointed but felt they had played well, Hi-lights just had the edge!

Game ten was against fellow club members Storms, who we had beaten 21-8 in the first game. Fire, possibly going into the game a little too relaxed, were given a run for their money! Emma Usherwood had a great game for Storms at GA and Fire managed a 19-19 draw by the skin of their teeth.

The final two games were also won convincingly by Fire, but we still had to settle for second place in the league!

I think I can confidently say that the whole of Fire enjoyed the Summer League. There was a good spirit between the players, everyone was willing to be helpful and considering we had such a large squad to try and share games out fairly between everyone stepped up or down readily! A great group of girls and some excellent play, well done!!

(A big thank you to Lynn McAra for being a great captain and turning up every week despite being injured. Also, to Emma McAra for helping out as vice-captain and umpiring. Fab stuff girls!)

Storms Report by Emma Hayter

Storms finished in 5th position in division one. The team was very happy with this result as they have retained their place in division one next year. Each player put a lot of teamwork into the league by playing different positions, umpiring and coming to support where there was a week off. Laura Baker was great as team captain, keeping everybody organised and in the know. The girls had a lot of fun working together as part of a new team and nobody gave up on one another, despite some horrific weather conditions and injuries.
