Phoenix Ferns 48 - 33 Elvington Diamonds

Phoenix Ferns began their NYNAL Division One campaign against newly promoted Elvington Diamonds with a well-fought win.

The newly promoted side started strongly and took a slender lead into first quarter time. Ferns upped the pace in the second quarter to regain the lead, with some fine interceptions from Alice Hardy and Wendy Sharp.

The attack also demonstrated their experience by moving the ball quickly around the circle courtesy of Shauna Mulligan, Emma McAra and George Radcliffe. Thanks to Ferns’ large squad, fresh players were brought on at half time, which allowed the centre court to maintain a fast pace. Sam Jefferson and Zoe Hannah moved the ball well to frustrate their opponents.

This, in combination with a change in defensive tactics from Captain Vicky Heap and Lizzie Hughes saw Ferns extend their lead.

The final quarter saw Ferns pull away courtesy of some excellent shooting from Steph Davies, to seal the first win of the new league season.
