Phoenix Ferns 46 - 36 Elvington Diamonds North Yorkshire Netball Riding Cup

Phoenix Ferns were matched against recent League opponents Diamonds in the first round of the Riding Cup. Ferns took an early lead thanks to some great feeds into the circle by George Radcliffe and Sam Jefferson.

These passes were neatly converted by Cath Hudson. The attacking flair was supported by some solid defence from Vicky Heap and Lizzie Hughes, with the score at quarter time 12-7. Ferns maintained their lead throughout the second quarter, with Zoe Hannah making a number of interceptions, to make the score at half time 19-14.

Thanks to Ferns’ large squad, a number of fresh players were able to be brought on at half time. Alice Hardy made an impact in centre court and player of the match Wendy Sharp played well as part of the defence. Some great shooting from Steph Davies and Emma McAra allowed Ferns to extend their lead to 7 at the end of the third quarter.

This lead was further extended in the final quarter, to win the match 46-36. Ferns remain unbeaten in their four matches this season and look to take this good form back into the league, with a number of tough fixtures approaching in the run up to Christmas.
