Phoenix Ferns earned a narrow victory against Rufforth Arrows to re-ignite their League campaign after two defeats. The match began slowly, perhaps a reflection of the Christmas break, with neither team having the impetus to take control of the game.
As a result, the first quarter finished 7-6 to Ferns. The second quarter began as the first had finished, although some accurate shooting from Emma McAra (GA) and Shauna Mulligan (GS) ensured Ferns retained their slender lead at half-time, 14-13. Ferns produced an excellent display in the third quarter to take control of the game.
This was initiated by a superb defensive effort by the trio of Wendy Sharp (WD), Lizzie Hughes (GD) and Captain Vicky Heap (GK), who disrupted the Rufforth attack and turned over possession with interceptions on a number of occasions. This created a platform for the attack who capitalised upon the opportunities with ease, with shooter Catherine Hudson converting a number of long-range shots. This period of play allowed Ferns to extend their lead to 24-17 at three-quarter time.
The final quarter reverted to the edgy netball of quarters one and two, despite Zoe Hannah (WA) and George Radcliffe (C) working hard in centre court. Despite being out-scored, Ferns hung on to claim a hard-fought 31-28 victory.
